
Building a Hybrid Cloud Document Hub for Ecopeaks Engineering and Construction Teams

Ecopeaks operates engineering and construction teams across multiple active project sites, generating and relying on a steady flow of architectural drawings, CAD files, site imagery, project contracts, and technical specifications throughout each build lifecycle.
Customer Challenge
As Ecopeaks' project portfolio grew, engineering document volume grew with it β spread across site-level devices and local storage with no centralised way to access or share files between construction sites and back-office teams. Engineers on-site needed fast, low-latency access to frequently used drawings and specifications, but standing up traditional on-premises file storage infrastructure at every site was costly and difficult to maintain.
There was no durable, centralised backend for this data, no consistent protection against data loss, and no operational visibility into how the storage environment was performing across sites. Ecopeaks needed a solution that felt like familiar local file storage to engineering teams, while being centrally managed, durable, and resilient in the cloud.
Partner's Solution
Digitspot designed and deployed a hybrid cloud file sharing and document management solution for Ecopeaks using AWS Storage Gateway (File Gateway) to provide NFS file shares backed by Amazon S3 storage, creating a high-performance edge-to-cloud Document Hub for engineering teams without requiring complex on-premises storage infrastructure.
The Storage Gateway File Gateway appliance runs on a dedicated Amazon EC2 instance (m5.xlarge) inside Ecopeaks' VPC, with a 150 GB gp3 local cache volume ensuring low-latency access to frequently used engineering documents. Engineering workstations connect using the standard NFS protocol, and the gateway transparently translates filesystem operations into Amazon S3 API calls, syncing all site data to a centralised, versioning-enabled S3 bucket protected with AES-256 server-side encryption at rest.
Amazon CloudWatch collects operational metrics across the Storage Gateway appliance, the underlying EC2 instance, and the S3 bucket, giving Digitspot and Ecopeaks visibility into cache performance and storage growth. AWS Backup runs automated daily backups of the Document Hub into a dedicated backup vault with a 30-day retention policy, providing ransomware resilience and a tested recovery path that did not exist before.

- Engineering teams get familiar, low-latency NFS file access at each site, backed transparently by durable, centralised Amazon S3 storage
- Architectural drawings, CAD files, site imagery, and project documentation are now consolidated in a single, versioned, encrypted repository instead of scattered local storage
